2. Front Porch Swing
Sittin’ on the front porch swing, waitin’ for the night to bring all the news, of another day / Sittin’ with my young son there, swingin’ in the cool night air, fireflies are stirrin’ about / Across the street there’s a TV flashing through the window pane / Folks are holed up behind their curtains, mesmerized insane By the good shows that can’t be missed tonight
Well the afternoon was hot; moon and stars are not; grass is cut; smell the hay Livin’ at the edge of town; you know when the hay comes down, & the cows make it like back home / We’ve paved the land inside the cities, whippoorwill took flight / Stole the darkness from the heavens, with electric lights / You and I here, sing a different song tonight
A long time ago a train, named “Old 97” came carryin’ mail, had to make up time The signs all said real-slow, but this train had to go; whistle blew, and the trestle came / A long time ago down While Oak Mountain, headed for Danville town / All the eyes of 80 some porch swings, wide-eyed jerked around Saw the evening and the good train tumble down
Sittin’ on the front porch swing, the whole town saw the train, crumblin’ steel, as the trestle gave / Somehow, it’s not the same; TV flat and plain, six o’clock, with Fred and Jane / Meanwhile here the breeze is pushing mosquitoes from the air / Fireflies wink and dot the darkness; does anyone care / For the good shows that can’t be missed out here?
It’s a dark and a half-moon night; stars are squeezin’ light past the shine of the old street lamp / Sittin’ in this evening town, seein’ what comes around, barking dogs, and sounds of June We’ve paved the land inside the cities, whippoorwill took flight / Stole the darkness from the heavens with electric lights / You and I here, sing a different song tonight.
